Drunk Elephant Bronzing Drops
I guess we’ll never know, but I wanted to share some of these drugstore products that were around in some cases years before the viral product, but they never really went viral themselves. So if that sounds good stay tuned and if you’re new here and you enjoy unsponsored makeup reviews be sure to hit the Subscribe button and let’s go ahead and jump right in and get started. The first viral product that I thought of are the Drunk Elephant Bronzing Drops. These actually launched back in June of 2018. They originally came in a tube, and then they ended up repackaging them more recently into the little dropper style bottle that they have now. When they kind of relaunched them, they all of a sudden went viral really just in the last year or so, but they’ve been around for quite some time. It’s sort of fascinating that a product that’s been out for about 6 years now only started going viral last year. But more recently a ton of different brands have come out with dupes. We have Pacifica, ELF, Tarte, Glow Recipe, Physicians Formula, everybody seems to be copying these in 2024.
Flower Beauty Heatwave Bronzing Drops
Even several years ago, back in, I think it was 2020, Flower Beauty had launched The Heatwave bronzing drops. Flower Beauty had an almost identical product to the Drunk Elephant way before they even went viral. But there is one drugstore product that’s been out even longer than all of them, and that’s…
L’Oral Youth Code Serum
L’Oral Youth Code Serum has been a staple in drugstore skincare for years now. Despite being ahead of its time with the incorporation of peptides and antioxidants, it never quite achieved the viral status of some other skincare products. However, it’s been quietly delivering great results to those in the know for years.
Covergirl TruBlend Matte Made Foundation
Another drugstore makeup product that was ahead of its time is Covergirl’s TruBlend Matte Made Foundation. This foundation offered a wide range of shades long before inclusivity became a buzzword in the beauty industry. Despite its forward-thinking shade range and long-lasting formula, it didn’t gain the same attention as some later foundations that followed suit.
Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm
Maybelline Baby Lips Lip Balm may seem like a basic lip balm, but its hydrating formula and tinted shades were way ahead of their time. Before lip oils and tinted lip balms became popular, Baby Lips was providing moisture and color to lips across the nation. It’s a classic drugstore product that deserves recognition for its early innovation in lip care.
LOreal True Match Lumi Glotion
The LOreal True Match Lumi Glotion was way ahead of the trends when it launched in January of 2018, about 6 months before the original drunk elephant. This product comes in four or five different shades to match different skin tones, with instructions to use a lighter shade for highlighting and a deeper shade for an all-over bronze effect. By mixing it with foundation or body lotion, it gives a believable bronze glow reminiscent of a sun-kissed vacation, without the negative effects of sun exposure.
Rare Beauty Liquid Blushes
Another product that was ahead of its time was the Rare Beauty liquid blushes, which were launched in September 2020 and quickly went viral. These blushes provided a beachy glow that was in high demand at the time, offering a natural flush of color that blended seamlessly into the skin. The lightweight, buildable formula allowed for a customizable look that was both trendy and timeless.
Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer
The Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Concealer was a game-changer in the drugstore makeup world when it was first released. This concealer featured a unique sponge applicator that made application quick and easy, while the formula provided full coverage with a natural finish. Its ability to brighten and conceal dark circles made it a must-have product for many makeup lovers, setting a trend for high-quality, affordable concealers in the market.
Revlon ColorStay Liquid Lipstick
Revlon ColorStay Liquid Lipstick was another drugstore product that was way ahead of the trends. This long-wearing liquid lipstick offered a comfortable matte finish that lasted all day without drying out the lips. With a wide range of shades to choose from, it became a favorite among makeup enthusiasts looking for a quality product that wouldn’t break the bank. Its innovative formula set the standard for affordable, long-lasting lip colors in the makeup industry.
Liquid Blushes
Before this point, people really didn’t talk about liquid blushes all that much. They were rare, but when Flower Beauty launched their blush bombs in November 2018, they garnered attention. These blush bombs, introduced way before Rare Beauty, were a hit in their own right. While they may not have received as much hype as later liquid blush launches, they were definitely ahead of the trends.
Influencers and Hype
It’s interesting to consider why certain makeup products go viral. Rare Beauty may have benefited from its status as a new brand and the influence of social media influencers, but it’s important to acknowledge that liquid blushes were already a thing before its launch. The trend of liquid blushes really took off after Rare Beauty, with drugstore brands like Milani, Elf, and NYX jumping on the bandwagon.
Product Comparison
When comparing the Flower Beauty blush bombs to Rare Beauty’s liquid blushes, one can notice some differences. The former seems to be a bit less pigmented, making it more user-friendly for beginners. While Rare Beauty may have overshadowed Flower Beauty in terms of popularity, it’s essential to recognize the trailblazing efforts of products that came before.
The OG Blush Bombs
Remember those OG blush bombs that had a lightweight, fluid texture and gave your skin a dewy finish way before dewy skin became a huge trend? These gems come in a wide range of gorgeous colors that are perfect for adding that touch of freshness to your complexion. Even though they might not be as hyped about anymore, they are still worth the purchase. You can find them at Ulta or Amazon, but it seems like CVS might have replaced them with new ones featuring a sponge tip applicator. Let’s hope they don’t discontinue the OG formula, because some people still prefer it over the new version. If you’re a fan of the blush bombs, it’s best to grab them before they vanish.
Charlotte Tilbury’s Hollywood Flawless Filter
The Hollywood Flawless Filter from Charlotte Tilbury took the beauty world by storm when it launched in March 2018. This product created such a buzz that many drugstore brands quickly came out with their own versions to compete. From E.L.F to Makeup Revolution to Juvia’s Place, everyone was trying to replicate the glowy primer that became a staple in many makeup routines. SE also came out with their version, but the original Hollywood Flawless Filter still stands out as a beautiful product. Whether you use it as a glowy base under your foundation or mix it in with your other base products for a radiant look, this product is truly versatile and timeless.
LOreal Lumi Glotion
One of the drugstore makeup products that was way ahead of the trends is the LOreal Lumi glotion. The formula of this product sits beautifully on the skin with its gel-like texture. Unlike the Hollywood Flawless filter, which is creamier and slightly thicker, the LOreal glotion is thin and easily mixable with other products. It provides a subtle glow without highlighting pores and texture too much, making it perfect for dry skin.
LOreal Magic Lumi Primer
Before the Lumi glotion, LOreal had their magic Lumi primer. This glowy base could be used under foundation to add even more radiance to the skin. It was popular back in 2009-2010 and gained viral attention when beauty bloggers started raving about it. LOreal has been ahead of the game with glowy primers for a long time, paving the way for other brands to follow suit.
The Power of Marketing
I think Charlotte Tilbury must have a really amazing marketing team, because a lot of her products go viral and most of the time I don’t feel like they’re that different than things that are already out there.
Tubing Mascara Trend
Thrive liquid lash extensions inspired a whole host of brands to make their own tubing formulas. Brands like e.l.f., Milani, Hourglass, and CI Ray have all come out with their versions. Despite its recent popularity, the liquid lash extensions concept has been around since 2017. However, there is one tubing formula that has been at the drugstore since 2009, and that’s the L’Oreal Double Extend Beauty Tubes Mascara.
Double Extending Beauty Tubes Mascara
This mascara is not just a tubing mascara; it also comes with a lengthening primer with fibers on the other side. It offers a two-in-one kind of deal, which has been appreciated by many users over the years. While some may prefer the more dramatic look of Thrive’s tubing mascara, L’Oreal’s version provides a more natural result. It gives a ton of length without smudging or flaking, and it’s effortless to remove with just water, no need for a cleanser.
The Tubing Mascara Phenomenon
When it comes to makeup trends, one product that was way ahead of its time was the tubing mascara that launched back in 2009. This mascara was a game-changer for those looking for a smudge-proof and flake-free formula, especially during the hot summer months or special occasions like weddings. Despite its innovative formula, it did not gain the viral attention it deserved, likely due to the lack of social media influence at the time.
The Rise of the Tarte Maracuja Juicy Lip
In contrast, the tarte maracuja juicy lip launched in June of 2020, but it was not until 2021 or 2022 that it truly gained momentum and went viral in the beauty community. This product, known for its hydrating and juicy finish, inspired a wave of copycats and dupes from various drugstore brands like e.l.f, NYX, Colourpop, Flower Beauty, and about face. The popularity of these melty lip balms in click pen-style applicators was a testament to their effectiveness and desirability.
Revlon Glass Shine Lipsticks
Revlon’s Glass Shine Lipsticks were way ahead of the trends when they launched earlier in 2020. Unlike traditional lipsticks, these have a melty texture that resembles a lip gloss in a stick. They offer tons of shine and feel super hydrating on the lips, giving off a glossy finish that is both elegant and moisturizing.
Glossy Shine in a Stick
What sets the Revlon Glass Shine Lipsticks apart is their glossy shine in a stick form. The twist-up style packaging makes them convenient to use, and the melting quality of the formula turns them into a hydrating oil upon contact with the skin. They provide a sheer hint of color while maintaining a smooth and comfortable feel on the lips.
Discontinued but Still Available
Although the Revlon Glass Shine Lipsticks have been discontinued, you can still find them on platforms like Amazon. Their popularity soared in 2022 and 2023, leading many to hope for their return. Fans of the formula have stocked up on different shades, highlighting the unique appeal of these lipsticks.
A Smooth Formula
One of the reasons why the Revlon Glass Shine Lipsticks stand out is their smooth formula. They are not as goopy as some other lip products, providing a more comfortable wear. The lipsticks hug the lips beautifully, sitting smoothly without any clumping or sticky residue.
Scent Preference
Another distinguishing feature of the Revlon Glass Shine Lipsticks is their pleasant vanilla scent. Unlike some other lip products that have a coconut fragrance, these lipsticks offer a delightful vanilla aroma that adds to the overall experience of wearing them. The scent enhances the application process, making it a more enjoyable moment of self-care.
The Disappearing Revlon Lip Balm
Revlon’s tinted lip balm formula was a hit, but unfortunately, it seemed like they were already on their way out before the trend really took off. By the time everyone was raving about them, it was too late. They started disappearing from shelves, with certain colors not being restocked. It was a classic case of being ahead of the trends, but not capitalizing on it.
The Rise of Glowy Baked Blushes
In 2024, we’re witnessing the resurgence of glowy baked blushes, with Rare Beauty leading the pack. Everyone seems to be talking about these blushes, featuring them in their Sephora recommendations and haul videos. However, this trend is not new at all. Baked glowy blushes have been around for years.
Milani Baked Blushes: The OGs
One of the earliest mentions of glowy baked blushes dates back to at least 2016, with the Milani baked blushes. These blushes have a beautiful formula that rivals even the newest releases. While Rare Beauty blushes are stunning, many makeup enthusiasts believe that Milani offers a bit more pigmentation and staying power.
Milani Baked Blushes
When it comes to drugstore makeup that was ahead of the trends, Milani Baked Blushes definitely come to mind. Known for their beautiful shades and smooth application, these blushes have been a favorite among makeup enthusiasts for years. While they may not have the same level of glow as the rare Beauty baked blushes, they still provide a beautiful flush of color to the cheeks.
Essence Pure Nude Blushes
Another drugstore gem that deserves a mention is the Essence Pure Nude Blushes. These blushes offer a subtle glow and a range of shades that cater to various skin tones. While they may not have as much pigmentation as the rare Beauty baked blushes, they still provide a beautiful, natural-looking flush to the cheeks.
Baked Face Products
Baked face products have been a game-changer in the beauty industry, offering a smooth and nourishing application for dry skin. The process of baking a cream formula creates a unique texture that applies seamlessly to the skin, giving a smooth and radiant finish. Brands like Milani and Essence have excelled in creating baked blushes that provide a beautiful glow to the skin, while still looking natural and flattering.
The Hype Around Rare Beauty Baked Blushes
While the rare Beauty baked blushes have garnered a lot of attention for their glowy finish and beautiful shades, it’s important not to overlook the gems that can be found at the drugstore. Milani and Essence offer high-quality baked blushes that may not be as hyped up, but still provide stunning results at a fraction of the cost.
Skin Tints: Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Tint
You probably already have them in your collection already and if you don’t they’re, incredible, definitely worth checking out and much less expensive. Another huge Trend that we’ve been seeing over the past couple of years are skin tints. I think every brand from drugstore to high end is coming out with skin tints.
They became a little bit more of a big deal after the pandemic when everybody was starting to just wear less makeup in general and go for a more natural look but there’s one skin tint that I have been loving since it came out in 2017 and that’s The Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Tint.
This has been my Holy Grail, favorite, skin tint and every single one that I’ve tried does not measure up to this one for me, and I think part of the reason is because a lot of the newer ones, especially at the drugstore, have a lot of alcohol in the formula – and they just make my skin look really dried out.
This Hydroboost one is alcohol free and it just makes my more mature 46-year-old skin, look so much more plump and dewy and just more hydrated. It kind of fills in those Fine Lines. A little bit more makes them less noticeable and it just leaves a sheer wash of color. So if I find myself needing a little more coverage, I’ll use this and then just add a concealer in the spots that I need it usually under my eyes and around my nose.
The Perfect Everyday Skin Tint
But otherwise this for me, is just the perfect everyday skin tint. Just no makeup makeup sort of look: it doesnt, look like you actually have product on. It. Just looks like your skin. So, even though this has been around for seven plus years, I still continue to buy it and, like I said its, my favorite out of all the skin tints that are out there yet another Trend that isnt brand specific.
Foundation Sticks: A Growing Trend
But I just am starting to see this pop up. All over the place are Foundation. Sticks we have the new ones from Ilia and Fenty. Hourglass has one that new brand Basma at Sephora also has a foundation stick. I just feel like these are really starting to pick up steam, but Foundation sticks are nothing new at the drugstore over the years. Brands like LOreal and Maybelline, and I think even Revlon had one at one point. But my personal favorite would have to be the Wet n Wild Foundation Stick.
Wet n Wild Foundation Stick vs. Tom Ford Foundation Stick
This launched back in 2019, I believe so its around 5 years old and Ive actually compared this formula to the Tom Ford Foundation stick which is over $80 because I think they are so similar to each other. The Wet n Wild one is so smooth on my skin and I generally dont like Foundation sticks because they tend to look a little heavy and Cakey and make upy when I put them on and this one its not as thick as the others.
The Wet n Wild Foundation Stick
When it comes to drugstore makeup that was way ahead of the trends, the Wet n Wild Foundation Stick definitely stands out. Despite being around for many years, this product seems to have a formula that rivals some of the newer, more popular options on the market. Back in 2019, when foundation sticks were not a common trend among makeup brands, Wet n Wild took a bold step by launching this product. It was not an instant hit, but now, it seems to be gaining more attention as other brands are jumping on the foundation stick bandwagon.
The Revlon ColorStay Foundation
Another classic drugstore makeup item that was ahead of its time is the Revlon ColorStay Foundation. This foundation has been a staple in many people’s makeup routines for years, offering long-lasting coverage and a wide range of shades. Despite being overshadowed by other newer releases, the Revlon ColorStay Foundation’s formula remains top-notch and comparable to high-end options. It’s interesting to see how some products stand the test of time and remain relevant even in the ever-changing world of makeup trends.
The Maybelline Great Lash Mascara
One iconic drugstore makeup product that was way ahead of the trends is the Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. This mascara has been a favorite among beauty enthusiasts for decades, thanks to its volumizing and lengthening formula. Despite the constant influx of new mascaras in the market, the Maybelline Great Lash Mascara continues to be a go-to choice for many. It’s a classic example of a product that was ahead of its time and has withstood the test of changing beauty trends.
The Covergirl Outlast Lip Color
Lastly, the Covergirl Outlast Lip Color is another drugstore makeup item that was ahead of its time. This long-wearing lip color formula was revolutionary when it first hit the shelves, offering hours of impeccable color without the need for constant touch-ups. While liquid lipsticks have become a popular trend in recent years, the Covergirl Outlast Lip Color remains a standout choice for those looking for a reliable and long-lasting lip color option. It goes to show that some products are truly timeless and can stay ahead of the trends, no matter how much the beauty industry evolves.
Revolutionizing Drugstore Makeup
The world of makeup is constantly evolving, with new trends emerging every season. While high-end brands often steal the spotlight, there are some hidden gems in the drugstore makeup aisle that were actually ahead of the trends. These products may not have received the same level of hype as their more expensive counterparts, but they were definitely groundbreaking in their own right.
Hidden Gems in the Drugstore
One such product is the Maybelline Great Lash Mascara. This iconic pink and green tube has been a staple in many makeup bags for decades. Its formula may seem simple compared to the volumizing and lengthening mascaras on the market today, but its classic design and reliable performance have stood the test of time. In fact, many makeup artists swear by this drugstore mascara for creating natural, fluttery lashes.
Timeless Innovations
Another drugstore makeup product that was ahead of the trends is the Wet n Wild Color Icon Eyeshadow Palette. Before the era of large, expansive eyeshadow palettes with countless shades, Wet n Wild was offering affordable, high-quality palettes with a curated selection of colors. These palettes were not only budget-friendly but also surprisingly pigmented and blendable, making them a favorite among makeup enthusiasts.
Revolutionary Formulas
One drugstore makeup brand that has consistently pushed the boundaries of innovation is L’Oreal. Their True Match foundation line, for example, was one of the first drugstore foundations to offer a wide range of shades with different undertones. This inclusive approach to shade matching was revolutionary at the time and set the standard for other brands to follow suit. Additionally, L’Oreal was also one of the first to introduce BB creams to the mass market, providing lightweight coverage with added skincare benefits.
As we continue to see new makeup trends come and go, it’s important to remember the drugstore makeup products that paved the way for the innovations we enjoy today. From classic mascaras to affordable eyeshadow palettes to diverse foundation shades, these hidden gems have proven that quality makeup doesn’t have to break the bank. So next time you’re browsing the drugstore aisles, keep an eye out for these products that were truly ahead of the trends.
